Prometric Exam for Sudanese Doctors, Nurses and Pharmacists: GCC Licensing from Sudan in 2026 — SMC Registration, MD (SMSB) Recognition, Getting Documents Verified During the Conflict, Where to Sit the Exam and Which Country to Choose
Sudanese healthcare professionals are one of the largest expatriate groups in Saudi and Gulf hospitals, and since 2023 most apply while displaced. This guide covers Saudi, UAE, Qatar and Oman requirements for Sudanese doctors, nurses and pharmacists, how the Sudan Medical Council registration and SMSB clinical MD are treated, what to do when a university or ministry cannot answer DataFlow, where to sit the exam, and how to keep a career gap from costing you the licence.
Sudanese doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory staff have worked in Gulf health systems for two generations; in parts of Saudi Arabia they are the backbone of the service. Since the conflict began in April 2023, the route has changed in one important way: most candidates now apply from outside Sudan — from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Uganda, Kenya or further afield — while their universities and ministries are disrupted. The licence is still entirely achievable. It needs more planning around documents than it used to.
Why the Gulf, and which country
| Country | What suits Sudanese candidates | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia (SCFHS) | By far the largest Sudanese medical community; Arabic is an asset; accepts recent graduates for many titles; very large public sector. Doctors sit the SMLE; nurses and others sit SCFHS Prometric papers (nursing guide). | Classification through Mumaris+ takes patience; degree attestation is needed for the work visa. |
| UAE (DHA, DOH, MOHAP) | Higher private-sector pay; fast process once documents verify; large Sudanese community in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman. | Two years' experience required for most titles; gap rules applied strictly (which UAE licence). |
| Qatar (QCHP) | Hamad Medical Corporation employs many Sudanese specialists; good packages. | Experience requirements; fewer vacancies than Saudi Arabia (QCHP guide). |
| Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait | Oman in particular has long-standing Sudanese recruitment. | Smaller markets (NHRA and OMSB, Kuwait). |

How Sudanese qualifications are treated
- MBBS from a Sudanese university plus the internship (housemanship) and Sudan Medical Council registration — accepted for General Practitioner assessment across the Gulf (GP guide). Permanent registration, not temporary, is what regulators expect to see.
- Clinical MD of the Sudan Medical Specialization Board (SMSB) — the standard Sudanese specialist qualification. It is assessed for the Specialist title, with the tier and the required post-qualification experience depending on the authority and specialty (recognition guide). Specialists then sit the paper for their own discipline (specialist overview). Many Sudanese doctors also hold the Arab Board or UK memberships and fellowships, which can place them higher (exemptions guide).
- BSc Nursing (four years) — Registered Nurse; a three-year diploma leads to a lower title in the UAE and Qatar, and is classified as technician-level in Saudi Arabia (diploma nurses by country). Registration is with the national council for medical and health professions.
- BPharm (five years) — Pharmacist (pharmacist guide); clinical roles need more (clinical pharmacist guide).
- Medical laboratory sciences, radiography, anaesthesia technology, physiotherapy — bachelor's graduates are assessed as technologists or specialists depending on the country; see the exam catalogue for the matching paper.
Confirm your own title with the eligibility check before paying for verification.
Documents and verification while institutions are disrupted
This is the part that has changed. DataFlow verifies each document at its source: it writes to your university, your council and your employers, and reports what they answer (how DataFlow works). When an issuing body is closed, relocated or slow, the report can come back as unable to verify — which is not a finding against you, but still stops the file (report statuses explained). What helps:
- Find out where your institution is operating now. Many Sudanese universities, the council and the ministries moved their administrative work to other cities or set up offices abroad. Get the current official email and contact for the registrar or verification office and give it to DataFlow in your application rather than leaving it to find an address that no longer answers.
- Collect everything you still hold. Original degree certificate, detailed transcript, internship completion, council registration certificate and card, national service or exemption papers, experience letters, passport. Scan at high resolution and keep copies in more than one place.
- Attestation. Saudi Arabia requires the degree to be attested by the issuing country's higher-education and foreign ministries and then by the Saudi embassy before the work visa is stamped. Those offices are functioning in relocated form; allow extra weeks and use only official channels. The UAE does not always require it for the licence, though employers may.
- Good standing certificate. Issued by the council, normally valid for a limited period, so request it last (guide). If you have been registered abroad since leaving Sudan — in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UK or elsewhere — a good standing certificate from that regulator covers the recent period.
- If a source genuinely cannot respond, regulators have discretion to consider alternative evidence on a case-by-case basis. Do not assume it; ask, in writing, and keep the reply. Never use an agent who offers to "arrange" a verification — a fabricated document ends a Gulf career permanently, in every country at once.
Experience letters cause as many problems as degrees. They must be on letterhead with dates, title, department and a verifiable contact (format). If your Sudanese hospital no longer functions, recent experience from your current country is what matters most anyway.
Career gaps
Displacement has left many clinicians out of practice for a year or more. Gulf regulators generally treat a gap of more than two years as requiring additional steps, and the UAE applies this strictly (gap rules). If you are approaching that line, documented clinical work — even a supervised or voluntary post in your current country, properly lettered — is worth more to your application than another month of exam preparation. Saudi Arabia is usually the more flexible destination for candidates with a recent gap.
Where to sit the exam
Book at the Prometric centre nearest to where you actually live now. Sudanese candidates most often sit in Cairo, Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam, Dubai or Abu Dhabi, Doha, Nairobi, Kampala or Addis Ababa; do not plan around a centre inside Sudan. Availability changes, so check the scheduler before you plan travel (test centre guide, booking and lead times). The name on your booking must match your passport exactly, including the order of the four-part name — a frequent problem for Sudanese candidates whose certificates and passports transliterate differently (exam day rules). Those in Egypt will find the process described in our Egypt guide useful for local logistics.
Preparing
- Doctors: the General Practice bank and the GP high-yield list; for Saudi Arabia add SMLE-length stamina practice.
- Nurses: the Registered Nurse bank and the nursing high-yield list.
- Pharmacists: the Pharmacist bank.
- Everyone: the 30-day study plan. Candidates who trained partly in Arabic should practise reading English vignettes at speed — it is pace, not knowledge, that costs most marks.
English tests are not required by most Gulf regulators for the licence itself (English requirements).
Costs and timeline
Budget USD 900–2,000 end to end depending on the authority and the number of documents (fee guide, fee calculator). Allow four to eight months rather than the usual three to five, because verification is the slow step. Start DataFlow first, prepare for the exam while it runs, and register in the talent pool so that an employer is ready when eligibility arrives — in Saudi Arabia employers frequently fund the later stages.
Frequently asked questions
Can Sudanese doctors get a Gulf licence while Sudan's institutions are disrupted?
Yes. The qualifications are still accepted. The difficulty is source verification, so find out where your university and council are operating now, give DataFlow current official contacts, and allow extra time.
Is the Sudanese clinical MD (SMSB) recognised in Saudi Arabia and the UAE?
It is assessed for the Specialist title. The tier and the post-qualification experience required depend on the authority and the specialty, so check eligibility before applying.
Where can Sudanese candidates sit the Prometric exam?
At any Prometric centre once eligibility is issued. Most sit in Cairo, the Saudi cities, the UAE, Doha, Nairobi, Kampala or Addis Ababa, depending on where they now live.
What happens if DataFlow cannot verify my Sudanese degree?
The report may come back as unable to verify, which stops the file but is not a negative finding. Provide current contact details for the institution, and ask the regulator in writing whether alternative evidence can be considered.
Which Gulf country is best for Sudanese healthcare workers?
Saudi Arabia has the largest Sudanese medical community, accepts recent graduates for many titles and is more flexible on gaps. The UAE and Qatar pay more in the private sector but usually require two years of recent experience.
