DHA Licence for Medical Lab Technologists 2026: Technologist vs Technician, Eligibility, the DHA Lab Exam, Fees in AED and INR, and Lab Jobs in Dubai

How medical laboratory professionals get a Dubai Health Authority licence in 2026: technologist vs technician titles, degree and experience rules, Sheryan and DataFlow, the DHA laboratory Prometric exam and blueprint, fees in AED, INR, PKR and PHP, the timeline and lab salaries in Dubai.

Dubai's hospitals, reference laboratories, diagnostic chains and blood banks hire medical laboratory staff all year. Every one of them needs a licence from the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). The route is the same Sheryan, DataFlow and Prometric sequence used by other professions, but the title you apply under decides which exam you sit and what you are paid.

Which title fits your qualification?

TitleTypical qualificationExperience
Medical Laboratory TechnologistBachelor's in medical laboratory science or technology (BSc MLT/MLS), usually four yearsAbout 2 years after qualification
Medical Laboratory TechnicianDiploma in medical laboratory technologyAbout 2–3 years after qualification
Senior or scientist titlesMaster's or doctorate in one discipline, such as microbiology or clinical biochemistryLonger post-qualification experience in that discipline

A degree in a pure science, such as a BSc in microbiology or biochemistry without clinical laboratory training, is often not accepted for the Technologist title on its own. Check your exact degree with the free eligibility check before paying for DataFlow. Discipline-specialist routes are explained in the lab scientists guide.

Documents you need

  • Degree or diploma certificate and transcripts.
  • Current registration with your home council, where your country registers lab professionals.
  • Experience certificates with exact dates, title, departments worked and HR contacts (format guide).
  • Good Standing Certificate issued within six months, if your country issues one (guide).
  • Passport and photograph.

Step by step

  1. Sheryan account and self-assessment. Choose Allied Health, then your lab title (Sheryan guide, self-assessment tool).
  2. Application and DataFlow. Usually 4–8 weeks (DataFlow guide).
  3. DHA laboratory exam at Prometric. The result appears on screen.
  4. Eligibility letter. Valid for a limited period, usually about a year, during which you find an employer.
  5. Licence activation. A DHA-licensed facility activates your licence and sponsors your visa.

With clean documents, allow about 2.5–4 months from Sheryan to eligibility letter.

The DHA laboratory exam

  • Computer-based single-best-answer MCQs, usually 100–150 items, with a pass mark of about 60%.
  • Blueprint: clinical chemistry, haematology and coagulation, microbiology and serology, blood bank and transfusion, histopathology and cytology basics, specimen handling, quality control and laboratory safety.
  • Technicians sit a more practical paper; technologists get more interpretation and quality-control items.

Prepare with the DHA exam for lab technicians page, the Technologist bank or Technician bank, and the lab sample questions with answers. The general syllabus is in the lab exam guide.
