Technologist or Technician? The classification that matters
- Medical Laboratory Technologist (LAB5631) — a 4-year bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology (BSc MLT, BMLS) plus internship and typically 2 years' experience. Higher pay band and supervisory roles.
- Medical Laboratory Technician (LAB5601) — a 2–3 year diploma (DMLT) or an associate degree plus 2 years' experience. Some authorities also place 3-year BSc degrees without internship here.
- Clinical Scientist — MSc/PhD in a discipline (e.g. Haematology Clinical Scientist, Microbiology Clinical Scientist) with discipline-specific exam codes.
