DHA Licence for Beauty Therapists, Laser Hair Reduction Technicians & Massage Therapists: Who Needs a Health Authority Licence, Exam Blueprints, Pass Marks, Qualifications and Salaries in Dubai and the UAE (2026)

Working in a Dubai medical or aesthetic clinic as a beauty therapist, laser technician or massage therapist requires a health-authority licence, not just a salon certificate. This guide explains when the licence applies, the three exams and their official syllabus — 100 questions at 65% for beauty therapists, 70 questions at 60% for laser hair reduction, 150 questions at 50% for massage therapists — accepted qualifications, the process and pay.

Dubai's aesthetic-medicine sector is one of the fastest-growing employers of licensed allied staff in the Gulf. Clinics cannot legally let an unlicensed person operate a laser, perform micro-needling or carry out therapeutic massage on patients — and inspectors do check. If you hold a beauty therapy, laser or massage qualification and want to work in a clinic, medical centre or hospital rather than a high-street salon, this is your licensing route.

Do you need a health-authority licence?

Where you workRegulated byLicence
Dermatology or aesthetic clinic, medical centre, hospital, medical spa licensed as a health facilityDHA in Dubai; DOH in Abu Dhabi; MOHAP in the northern emiratesProfessional licence required — assessment and exam
Beauty salon, hair salon, hotel spa licensed as a commercial (non-health) businessMunicipality and economic department rulesNo health-authority professional licence; local occupational and hygiene requirements apply

The difference matters for your career: a health-authority licence moves you into the clinical pay band and lets you perform procedures — laser, micro-needling, chemical peels, radiofrequency — that salons may not offer.

The three exams at a glance

Title (code)QuestionsTimePass mark
Aesthetician / Beauty Therapist (BYT5862)1002 h65%
Laser Hair Reduction Technician (LHR6102)702 h60%
Massage Therapist (MAS5511)1503 h50%

Note the beauty therapist pass mark. At 65% it is higher than the nursing and GP papers, and candidates who assume a "beauty exam" will be easy are the ones who fail it.

Beauty therapist exam — official coverage

  • Anatomy and physiology — skin structure and layers, hair and nail, muscles of the face, lymphatic and circulatory basics
  • Health and safety — infection control, sterilisation and disinfection levels, cross-contamination, contraindications, client consultation and record keeping
  • Skin care — skin typing (including Fitzpatrick), conditions and disorders you must recognise and refer, product ingredients
  • Facial electrotherapy — galvanic, high frequency, microcurrent, faradic: effects, indications, contraindications
  • Micro-needling — needle depth, aftercare, contraindications
  • Chemical peels and hydrafacial — peel agents and depths, pre- and post-care, complications
  • Radiofrequency — mechanism, safety, contraindications (pacemakers, metal implants, pregnancy)
  • Professionalism and ethics

The reference texts are the standard esthetics fundamentals textbooks plus infection-control standards. Roughly a third of questions turn on a contraindication or a safety step — learn those lists cold.

Laser hair reduction exam — official coverage

  • Skin structure, hair anatomy and biology — growth cycle (anagen, catagen, telogen) and why treatment is timed to it
  • Laser classifications — Alexandrite, diode, Nd:YAG, IPL; wavelengths and which skin types each suits
  • Fundamentals of laser operation — selective photothermolysis, fluence, pulse duration, spot size, cooling
  • Patient care and treatment planning — consultation, Fitzpatrick typing, patch testing, intervals, realistic outcomes
  • Patient and occupational safety — eye protection by wavelength, controlled area and signage, burns, paradoxical hypertrichosis, pigment change, managing complications
  • Professional ethics and responsibility

Only 70 questions means each one is worth more: you need 42 correct. The reference list includes the local standards for non-surgical cosmetic procedures and the international standard for safe laser use in healthcare, so expect safety-protocol questions, not just physics. Doctors who want to add the procedure to their scope sit a separate privilege paper (LHR6103).

Massage therapist exam — official coverage

  • Anatomy — muscles, origins and insertions, joints, nerves
  • Physiological effects and contraindications of massage
  • Basic techniques — effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction, vibration; myofascial release; Thai massage principles
  • Physical evaluation skills — posture, range of motion, muscle testing
  • Management of disease and of sports conditions by massage

It is the longest of the three papers at 150 questions, and the anatomy load is the reason people fail — the reference list includes standard physiology, orthopaedic assessment and therapeutic exercise texts. Physiotherapy-trained candidates should look at the physiotherapist route instead, which carries a higher title and salary.

Qualifications usually accepted

  • Beauty therapist: a recognised diploma in beauty therapy or esthetics of adequate duration — internationally benchmarked awards such as CIDESCO, ITEC, CIBTAC, VTCT / NVQ Level 3 and equivalent national diplomas are the common ones — plus post-qualification experience, typically two years.
  • Laser hair reduction technician: a beauty therapy or healthcare qualification plus a recognised laser / light-therapy certificate covering laser safety, and hands-on experience. Nurses commonly add this title.
  • Massage therapist: a diploma in massage therapy with documented training hours, plus experience.

Short online certificates and weekend courses are the main cause of rejection. If your certificate does not state study hours and an awarding body that DataFlow can contact, fix that first (rejection reasons). Check your own case with the eligibility check.

Process and timeline

  1. Register on the authority portal — for Dubai, Sheryan — and select the correct title.
  2. DataFlow verification of diploma and experience letters (experience letter format). Salon employers often issue letters that fail on format — no letterhead, no dates, no job title.
  3. Eligibility, then book the exam (steps).
  4. Pass, accept an offer from a licensed facility, licence activated.

Two to four months is typical. Fees are in the fee guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do beauty therapists need a DHA licence in Dubai?

Only if they work in a DHA-licensed health facility such as a dermatology or aesthetic clinic. Therapists in ordinary beauty salons fall under municipality and commercial licensing rules rather than the health authority.

What is the pass mark for the DHA beauty therapist exam?

65%. The paper has 100 multiple-choice questions in two hours and covers anatomy, health and safety, skin care, facial electrotherapy, micro-needling, chemical peels, radiofrequency and ethics.

How many questions are in the laser hair reduction technician exam?

70 questions in two hours with a 60% pass mark, so 42 correct answers are needed. Laser physics, skin typing and safety make up most of the paper.

Can a nurse work as a laser technician in Dubai?

Yes. Nurses commonly add the laser hair reduction title by presenting a recognised laser safety certificate and passing the laser paper. Doctors sit a separate privilege exam.
