Prometric Exam for Operation Theatre Technicians & Dialysis Technicians: GCC Requirements, Technician vs Technologist Titles, Exam Blueprint, Fees & Salaries (2026)

Operation theatre (OT/scrub) technicians and dialysis technicians are two of the most-recruited technical roles in Gulf hospitals, and two of the most confusing to license because every regulator splits them into technician and technologist grades. This guide maps Indian, Filipino and other diplomas and degrees to the right title, explains the exam for each, and lists fees, timelines and salaries.

Two-year and three-year technical diplomas in operation theatre technology and dialysis technology are among the most common allied-health qualifications in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Philippines — and Gulf hospitals hire both roles in volume. The catch is the technician vs technologist split: the same person can be licensed at two different grades, with very different pay, depending on programme length and the regulator. This guide sorts it out.

Technician vs technologist

GradeTypical qualificationExperiencePay band
TechnologistBachelor's (BSc OT Technology, BSc Renal Dialysis Technology, BSc Medical Technology with specialisation) — 3–4 years1–2 yearsHigher
TechnicianDiploma (2–3 years) — DOTT, Diploma in Dialysis Technology, Diploma in OT & Anaesthesia Technology1–2 years (0–1 in Saudi Arabia)Lower
Aide / AssistantCertificate (under 2 years)Lowest; not licensed by every regulator

Combined OT-and-anaesthesia diplomas are usually licensed under one title; choose OT technician or anaesthesia technician based on where your experience is (the anaesthesia technician guide covers the other path). Check both with the eligibility check.

Operation theatre technicians

  • Scope: scrub and circulating duties, instrument preparation and counts, sterile field maintenance, positioning, equipment (diathermy, suction, lights, tourniquets), specimen handling, CSSD liaison.
  • Regulators: SCFHS (largest demand; new graduates accepted), DHA, MOHAP, DOH, QCHP, NHRA, OMSB.
  • Exam blueprint: aseptic technique and sterilisation (20–25%), surgical instruments and procedures by specialty (25%), patient safety, positioning and WHO checklist (15%), anaesthesia support and emergencies (15%), infection control and waste (10%), anatomy and terminology (10%).
  • Practice: OT Technician bank and OT Technologist bank.

Dialysis technicians

  • Scope: haemodialysis machine set-up, priming and disinfection, water treatment (RO) monitoring, vascular access cannulation where permitted, patient monitoring during treatment, reprocessing, emergencies (hypotension, air embolism, disequilibrium).
  • Regulators: all GCC regulators license dialysis technicians; Saudi Arabia and the UAE have the largest dialysis networks (Saudi MOH, DaVita, Diaverum, NMC, Mediclinic).
  • Exam blueprint: dialysis principles and machine technology (25%), water treatment and quality (10–15%), vascular access and cannulation (15%), complications and emergencies (15%), renal physiology, fluid and electrolytes (15%), infection control and hepatitis precautions (10%), documentation and ethics (5%).
  • Practice: Dialysis Technician bank and Dialysis Technologist bank.

Exam format

Technician-grade papers are typically 70–100 MCQs over two to two and a half hours with a scaled pass mark around 60% (pass scores). Questions are practical: "the next step when…", "the correct action if the dialysate conductivity alarm…", "which instrument for…". Follow the 30-day plan using the topic weights above.

Documents and DataFlow

Diploma or degree, mark sheets, internship or clinical-training certificate, paramedical council registration where one exists (several Indian states and the Philippines have registers; where none exists the regulator accepts the qualification verification alone), experience letters and good standing. DataFlow 4–8 weeks (guide). The most common flag is a diploma from an institution DataFlow cannot reach — see what to do about an insufficient report.

Fees and timeline

  • DataFlow USD 250–400; exam USD 150–250 (technician grades); licence by regulator — see the fee guide
  • 3–5 months to eligibility

Frequently asked questions

Is DOTT (Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology) accepted in the GCC?

Yes. A two- to three-year OT technology diploma is licensed at the Operation Theatre Technician grade by SCFHS, DHA, MOHAP, DOH, QCHP and NHRA, subject to DataFlow verification and the experience requirement.

What is the difference between a dialysis technician and a dialysis technologist licence?

The technologist grade requires a bachelor's degree in dialysis or medical technology; the technician grade accepts a diploma. Scope is similar, but the technologist grade carries a higher pay band and supervisory eligibility.

Can OT technicians get a Saudi licence without experience?

Yes. SCFHS classifies new diploma and degree graduates at the technician or technologist grade and allows them to sit the exam; many MOH and private hospitals hire at entry level.

Which exam do combined OT and anaesthesia technology diploma holders sit?

One of the two — Operation Theatre Technician or Anaesthesia Technician — chosen by the title applied for. Regulators do not license both titles from a single application.
