- Qualification: bachelor's or diploma in dental hygiene (2–4 years) from a recognised programme, with clinical training; home registration where a register exists (e.g. US/Canadian licensure, UK GDC, Philippine PRC, Indian state dental council for hygienists).
- Experience: 2 years (UAE, Qatar); 0–1 year (Saudi Arabia).
- Scope: scaling and root planing, prophylaxis, fluoride and sealants, oral-health education, radiographs, periodontal charting — under a dentist's supervision.
- Exam: 70–100 MCQs; domains — periodontology and instrumentation (25%), oral pathology and medicine (15%), radiology and radiation safety (10%), pharmacology and local anaesthesia (10%), preventive dentistry and patient education (15%), infection control and sterilisation (15%), dental materials and ethics (10%). Dental assistant
- Qualification: diploma or certificate in dental assisting / dental nursing (1–2 years) — regulators generally require a formal programme of at least one year with clinical placement; on-the-job training alone is not accepted.
- Experience: 1–2 years.
- Scope: four-handed chairside assisting, instrument and material preparation, sterilisation, radiograph assistance, patient preparation, records and inventory.
- Exam: 60–100 MCQs; domains — chairside assisting and instruments (25%), infection control and sterilisation (25%), dental materials (15%), radiography assistance (10%), anatomy and terminology (10%), emergencies and patient management (10%), ethics and records (5%).
