Demand for psychological services in the Gulf has grown faster than almost any other area of healthcare — insurers have widened mental-health cover, schools are required to provide student support, and stigma is falling. Supply has not kept up. For a properly qualified psychologist the job market is excellent; the difficulty is that "properly qualified" is defined strictly, and many applicants discover that only after paying for verification.

First: a bachelor's degree is not enough

Every Gulf health regulator sets a postgraduate minimum for psychologists:

• A master's degree in clinical psychology (or counselling, health or educational psychology for the corresponding title), following a bachelor's in psychology, with a documented supervised clinical placement — or
• A doctorate (PhD or PsyD) in clinical psychology, which usually attracts a higher title and shorter experience requirement.
• Post-master's clinical experience, typically two years, in a recognised clinical setting.
• Home registration where a statutory register exists — RCI for Indian clinical psychologists (the MPhil Clinical Psychology route), HCPC in the UK, state licensure in the US, AHPRA in Australia, HPCSA in South Africa, PRC in the Philippines.

If you intend to diagnose, work alongside psychiatrists or have sessions covered by medical insurance, you need the DHA route. Outside Dubai, DOH (Abu Dhabi) and MOHAP license psychologists on the same postgraduate basis; SCFHS classifies master's holders as Specialist and doctorate holders at a higher grade; QCHP licenses psychologists as allied health practitioners.

One boundary is universal: psychologists in the GCC do not prescribe. Medication belongs to psychiatrists, who sit the Specialist Psychiatry paper instead.
