GCC Medical Licence Renewal: CME/CPD Hours, Validity Periods and Renewal Steps for DHA, DOH, MOHAP, SCFHS, QCHP, NHRA & OMSB

How to keep your Gulf licence active — validity period and renewal window for every authority, the CME/CPD credit hours required per year, accredited course rules, renewal fees, what happens if your licence lapses, and how a gap affects future transfers.

Getting licensed is a project; staying licensed is a habit. Every GCC authority ties renewal to continuing medical education (CME) or continuing professional development (CPD) credits, and a lapsed licence can mean re-sitting the exam, a fine, or losing the exam exemption you would otherwise have when you transfer. This is the renewal rulebook, authority by authority.

Numbers are the commonly applied 2026 figures; each authority publishes an annual CME circular, and facilities often set stricter internal requirements. Verify against your own portal.

What counts as CME/CPD

  • Accredited activities — conferences, workshops and online modules accredited by the authority itself (DHA, DOH, SCFHS, QCHP) or by recognised bodies (ACCME, RCP, RCPI, EACCME). Non-accredited certificates usually count only for a limited “self-directed” portion.
  • Category split — most authorities require a minimum share (often 50–70%) from accredited, interactive activities and cap self-directed learning, journal reading and teaching.
  • Specialty relevance — DHA and SCFHS require a proportion of credits within your own specialty.
  • BLS/ACLS — required as a separate condition for many clinical titles and usually counts toward CME.

Keep certificates as PDFs with your name exactly as on the licence, the accreditation number, date and credit hours. Upload as you go; do not wait for renewal month.

Renewal steps (typical)

  1. Log CME credits in the portal (Sheryan, Mumaris+, QCHP e-services) through the year.
  2. When the renewal window opens, the facility (medical director / HR) initiates the renewal for employed staff; self-employed practitioners initiate themselves.
  3. Upload updated Good Standing (if required), malpractice insurance certificate (DHA/DOH/QCHP), and a fitness declaration.
  4. Pay the renewal fee — roughly USD 270–820 depending on title and authority (see the fee guide).
  5. Renewed licence issued electronically; print the new card for the facility file.

If your licence lapses

  • Grace period — most authorities allow 30–90 days with a late fee; DHA and DOH fines escalate monthly.
  • Beyond the grace period — the licence is cancelled. Reactivation typically requires a new application, updated DataFlow and, after long gaps, the exam again.
  • Practising on a lapsed licence is a disciplinary offence for both you and the facility — it can appear on your Good Standing and block transfers.
  • Career-gap rule — a lapse over 1–2 years usually removes the exam exemption when you move authority (see gap rules and the transfer guide).

Leaving the GCC or changing employer

  • Cancel or place the licence on hold through the portal when you leave; an uncancelled licence tied to an old employer complicates re-entry.
  • Request a Good Standing Certificate before the licence is cancelled (guide).
  • Employer change within the same authority is a licence transfer, not a renewal — the new facility initiates it and CME status carries over.

Practical tips

  • Set a calendar reminder 120 days before expiry — enough time to earn missing credits.
  • Use your authority's free accredited online modules to cover the self-directed quota cheaply.
  • Keep BLS/ACLS renewal dates aligned with the licence date.
  • Check that your name and passport number in the portal match the new passport after renewal — a mismatch blocks the licence renewal.

Frequently asked questions

How many CME hours do I need to renew a DHA licence?

Physicians and dentists need 40 credit hours per year; nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals need 20, with a minimum share from DHA-accredited activities.

How many CME hours does SCFHS require?

Across a three-year registration cycle: about 60 hours for consultants, 45 for specialists and 30 for nurses and technicians, from SCFHS-accredited providers.

What happens if my GCC licence expires?

There is usually a 30–90 day grace period with late fees. After that the licence is cancelled and reactivation may require a new application, fresh DataFlow and possibly the exam again.

Does CME from my home country count for GCC licence renewal?

Partly. Credits accredited by recognised international bodies (ACCME, Royal Colleges, EACCME) are usually accepted; unaccredited certificates count only toward the self-directed portion.
