Cost of Living and Savings for Nurses and Doctors in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha 2026: Rent, Food, Transport, Remittances — and How Much You Can Really Save

How much a nurse or doctor can actually save in the Gulf in 2026: monthly costs for rent, food, transport and phone in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha, worked savings examples for single and family budgets, and the package details that change the answer the most.

The headline salary is only half of the Gulf decision. What matters is what is left at the end of the month — and that depends mostly on whether your employer provides accommodation and whether your family is with you. This guide puts numbers on it for 2026.

All living costs below are indicative monthly ranges for a modest, comfortable lifestyle; your own spending will differ. Rents in particular move quickly — check current listings for the area near your hospital.

Worked example: a registered nurse

A nurse earning AED 7,500 in Dubai, with shared accommodation and transport provided by the hospital, typically spends AED 1,500–2,500 a month on food, phone and personal costs — leaving AED 5,000–6,000 to save or send home (INR 120,000–144,000 or PHP 77,500–93,000).

The same nurse paid an "all-inclusive" AED 8,500 with no accommodation, renting a shared room at AED 2,000 and paying transport, saves closer to AED 3,500–4,500 — less, despite the higher salary. That is why reading the package matters.

In Riyadh, a nurse on SAR 6,500 with accommodation provided commonly saves SAR 4,000–5,000 a month (Saudi nurse salary); in Doha, a nurse on QAR 8,000 with housing saves around QAR 5,000–6,000 (Qatar nurse salary).

Worked example: a specialist doctor with family

A specialist on AED 40,000 in Dubai with a housing allowance, renting a two-bedroom flat, with two children in school, might spend AED 9,000–12,000 on rent, AED 6,000–10,000 on school fees, and AED 5,000–7,000 on living costs. Savings of AED 12,000–18,000 a month are realistic. School fees are the swing factor — an education allowance in the package changes the picture completely.

In Riyadh or Doha the same family usually spends less on rent; in Saudi Arabia, budget for the dependant levy of SAR 400 a month per dependant unless the employer pays it.

What changes your savings the most

  1. Accommodation provided vs allowance vs nothing.
  2. Family with you — rent, school fees and visas (family visa rules).
  3. Transport — a car costs far more than a hospital bus.
  4. Night and overtime pay.
  5. End-of-service gratuity — a lump sum you receive when you leave; count it as savings.

Sending money home

Salaries are paid into a local bank account. Compare exchange houses and app-based transfers — the rate difference over a year is often worth a week's pay. All six Gulf countries are tax-free on salary, but check how your home country treats foreign income and NRI/OFW status.

Frequently asked questions

How much can a nurse save in Dubai?

With accommodation and transport provided, a registered nurse on about AED 7,500 can typically save AED 5,000–6,000 a month.

Is Saudi Arabia cheaper to live in than Dubai?

Generally yes, especially for rent. Many Saudi hospitals also provide accommodation.

Is it better to take accommodation or a housing allowance?

For a single person, provided accommodation usually leaves more money. For families, an allowance gives more choice.

Rent for a two-bedroom flat and school fees are the big items; a family of four commonly needs AED 20,000 a month or more before savings.

Do I pay tax on my Gulf salary?

Not in the Gulf. Check your home country's rules on foreign income.
