Almost every clinical licence in the Gulf asks for a valid life-support certificate at some point — usually when the licence is activated, and again at renewal. It is a cheap, simple requirement that still delays hundreds of candidates a year because their card is expired, online-only or from a provider the employer does not accept. This guide explains what you need.

DHA, DOH, MOHAP, SCFHS, QCHP, NHRA, Oman and Kuwait all apply this pattern, but the exact list is set by the authority's policy for your title and, often more strictly, by the hospital's own credentialing. When an offer letter names a certificate, that requirement is binding.

Accepted providers

• American Heart Association (AHA) courses are the most widely accepted across the Gulf, delivered by AHA-authorised training centres.
• Equivalent recognised programmes (for example European Resuscitation Council courses) are accepted by many authorities and employers, but check with the employer before booking.
• Online-only certificates are generally refused. The course must include a hands-on skills session with an instructor. A blended course (online theory plus in-person skills test) is fine.

Validity

• BLS, ACLS, PALS: 2 years.
• NRP: 2 years.
• ATLS: 4 years.

The card must be valid on the day the licence is activated, not just when you applied. If yours expires within the next six months, renew it before you travel.

Cost and where to take it

• At home: AHA BLS in India, Pakistan, the Philippines or Egypt is typically the cheapest option and is fully accepted when delivered by an authorised centre.
• In the Gulf: BLS usually costs a few hundred dirhams or riyals, ACLS and PALS roughly two to three times that. Many hospitals run courses in-house and pay for them for staff.

When in the process you need it

1. Application: some authorities and employers ask for a copy with the file.
2. Licence activation: almost always checked. An expired card blocks activation.
3. Renewal: required again, and it usually counts towards CME/CPD hours (renewal and CME guide).

Is BLS mandatory for a DHA licence?

For clinical professionals, yes. A valid BLS certificate is expected at licence activation, and ACLS for many acute-care roles.

Is an online BLS certificate accepted in the Gulf?

Do nurses need ACLS for the GCC?
