Sri Lanka flagThe NHRA pathway from Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan nurses and doctors are a smaller but well-regarded group in GCC hospitals, particularly in the UAE, Qatar and Oman. SLMC and SLNC registers are recognised across the Gulf, and PGIM board-certified doctors classify directly as Specialists.

The Sri Lanka-specific complication is the public-sector bond: many nurses and doctors are government employees, and DataFlow will verify with the Ministry of Health, so make sure your release or leave documentation is in order before you start.

Which Sri Lankan qualifications NHRA accepts

Recognition rules are set by NHRA and change over time — treat this as a starting map, not a guarantee, and confirm your own title with the free eligibility check.

Nurses
Degree route
  • BSc Nursing (university, 4-year)
  • BSc Nursing (post-basic, Open University)
Diploma route
  • Ministry of Health School of Nursing diploma (3-year)
  • Private nursing school diplomas — acceptance varies; SLNC registration is the deciding factor
ClassificationMOH-trained diploma nurses with SLNC registration are typically accepted as Registered Nurse in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman with around 2 years' experience; SCFHS generally maps the 3-year diploma to Nurse Technician. BSc Nursing is accepted as RN across the GCC.
Doctors
Basic qualification (GP tier)

MBBS from a state medical faculty (or SLMC-recognised foreign degree with ERPM passed), plus internship and full SLMC registration

Usually accepted for Specialist
  • MD from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) with board certification
  • MRCP / MRCOG / FRCS or other recognised international boards
Usually not enough on its own
  • PGIM Diploma or MD without completed board certification is usually read as Registrar / GP-plus, not Specialist
  • Foreign postgraduate qualifications not recognised by SLMC

Pharmacists

BPharm (university) with SLMC pharmacist registration; Ministry of Health pharmacy diplomas generally map to technician tiers.

Allied health

BSc in MLS, Physiotherapy or Radiography from a university, or MOH-trained diploma holders with SLMC registration (usually technician tiers).

Sri Lanka-specific notes

Good Standing councils
  • Nurses: Sri Lanka Nursing Council (SLNC)
  • Doctors: Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC)
  • Pharmacists: Sri Lanka Medical Council (pharmacist register)
  • Allied: Sri Lanka Medical Council (allied registers) / Ministry of Health
DataFlow & attestation

Verification of Sri Lanka-issued documents typically takes 5–9 weeks — the longest single step in the NHRA process.

Documents typically need Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Colombo) consular attestation, then destination-embassy attestation. University degrees may first need the university registrar's confirmation.

Common problems for Sri Lankan applicants

  • SLNC verification delayed for nurses whose registration was never transferred from the older paper register
  • Government-employed nurses and doctors needing Ministry of Health release / no-objection documentation alongside Good Standing
  • PGIM verification requests that require the candidate's own written authorisation before the institute will respond
  • Name mismatch between passport, degree certificate and council registration (a missing middle name or a different spelling is enough to stall DataFlow)
  • Experience letters that don't state the hospital's bed count, your exact dates or the HR office contact details verifiers will phone
  • Internship or house-job time counted as post-qualification experience — every GCC authority counts experience only after full registration
  • Lapsed or un-renewed home-council registration at the time the Good Standing Certificate is requested

Most of these are cheap to fix before DataFlow starts and expensive afterwards — the free eligibility check flags them from your documents.
