Prometric Exam for Pharmacy Technicians & Pharmacy Assistants: DHA, MOHAP, DOH, SCFHS & QCHP Requirements, Exam Blueprint, D.Pharm vs B.Pharm Titles, Fees & Salaries (2026)
D.Pharm and pharmacy-technician diploma holders can work in Gulf hospitals and retail chains — but under the Pharmacy Technician title, not as pharmacists. This guide explains the title rules, which qualifications map where, the exam blueprint with calculations and dispensing focus, fees, the DataFlow step, timelines, salaries, and the upgrade path to Pharmacist.
The Gulf licenses pharmacy staff in two tiers: Pharmacist (B.Pharm, Pharm.D, M.Pharm) and Pharmacy Technician / Assistant (D.Pharm, pharmacy-technician diplomas, certificate programmes). Thousands of D.Pharm graduates from India, Pakistan, Egypt and the Philippines work in GCC hospital and retail pharmacies at the technician grade. This guide is for them; pharmacists should read the pharmacist guide.
Which qualification gets which title
| Qualification | GCC title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| B.Pharm, Pharm.D, M.Pharm with pharmacy-council registration | Pharmacist | Separate exam and guide |
| D.Pharm (2-year diploma) with state pharmacy-council registration | Pharmacy Technician | The most common route; Indian D.Pharm is accepted across the GCC at technician grade |
| Pharmacy Technician diploma / associate degree (1.5–2 years, e.g. Philippines, Egypt, North America with PTCB) | Pharmacy Technician | |
| Certificate (under 1 year) or on-the-job only | Pharmacy Assistant in some regulators; often not licensable | Check regulator |
A D.Pharm holder cannot be licensed as a pharmacist anywhere in the GCC regardless of experience. The upgrade path is a B.Pharm (lateral entry in India is two to three years) followed by a fresh application. Confirm your mapping with the eligibility check.
Regulator requirements
- DHA (Dubai): pharmacy-technician diploma (usually 2 years) + registration + 2 years' experience; DataFlow; Prometric exam. Retail chains (Aster, Life, BinSina) and hospitals recruit continuously.
- MOHAP: same tiers; Prometric; the licence is valid across the Northern Emirates and is the common retail-pharmacy licence.
- DOH (Abu Dhabi): same; Pearson VUE exam.
- SCFHS (Saudi Arabia): classifies Pharmacy Technician by programme length; new graduates accepted; MOH and Nahdi/Al-Dawaa retail chains are large employers.
- QCHP (Qatar): diploma + 2 years; Prometric.
- NHRA, OMSB, Kuwait MOH: similar structure, smaller markets.
Exam blueprint
- 70–100 MCQs, 2–2.5 hours, scaled pass mark around 60% (pass scores)
- Pharmaceutical calculations (20%): doses, concentrations, dilutions, alligation, IV flow rates, days' supply — the heaviest and most predictable block
- Dispensing and prescription processing (20%): prescription interpretation, abbreviations, labelling, controlled-drug handling
- Pharmacology basics (20%): drug classes, common brand/generic pairs, major interactions, look-alike/sound-alike drugs
- Pharmaceutics and compounding (15%): dosage forms, sterile and non-sterile compounding, stability and storage
- Inventory, cold chain and regulations (15%): storage temperatures, expiry management, narcotics register, GCC regulatory basics
- Patient safety and communication (10%): medication-error prevention, counselling limits, confidentiality
Prepare with the Pharmacy Technician practice bank. Calculations are pure marks — practise until you can do a dilution or an alligation in under a minute. Follow the 30-day plan with the weights above.
Documents and DataFlow
Diploma and mark sheets, pharmacy-council registration certificate (mandatory where a register exists, e.g. Indian state pharmacy councils), experience letters from a licensed pharmacy stating dispensing duties, and a good-standing certificate. DataFlow 4–8 weeks (guide). Lapsed council registration is the most common negative — renew before applying (report statuses explained).
Fees and timeline
- DataFlow USD 250–400; exam USD 150–250; licence and registration by regulator — see the fee guide
- 3–5 months to eligibility
