Midwives and assistant nurses are the two groups most often told “you don't qualify” — usually wrongly. GCC authorities license both, under their own titles and exam codes: Registered Midwife (MID5104), Assistant Nurse (ARN5061) and Assistant Midwife (MID5101). The trick is applying under the right one.

Requirements by authority
- DHA / MOHAP / DOH — Registered Midwife: midwifery qualification + registration + 2 years' experience. Assistant Nurse: 2-year programme + 2 years' experience; scope restricted to supervised care.
- SCFHS — Midwife Specialist (bachelor's) or Midwife Technician (diploma); Assistant Nurse classified as Nursing Technician-level assistant. Fresh graduates may sit the exam.
- QCHP — Midwives licensed with 2 years' experience; assistant nurse category limited.
- NHRA / OMSB — both titles accepted; 1–2 years' experience; quickest processing.
Exam format
- Registered Midwife: 100–150 MCQs, 2.5–3 hours, pass mark ≈ 60%

Midwifery blueprint (MID5104)
- Antenatal care (20%) — booking investigations, screening schedule, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, anaemia, Rh isoimmunisation, fetal growth assessment.
- Intrapartum care (25%) — stages of labour, partograph, fetal monitoring and CTG interpretation, malpresentations, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, active management of third stage, PPH.
- Postnatal care (15%) — involution, breastfeeding support, postnatal depression screening, perineal care, contraception counselling.
- Neonatal care (20%) — neonatal resuscitation algorithm, APGAR, thermoregulation, jaundice, hypoglycaemia, immunisation at birth, danger signs.
- Pharmacology (10%) — oxytocin, misoprostol, magnesium sulphate protocol and toxicity, anti-D, drugs in pregnancy and lactation.
- Professional practice, infection control, ethics (10%) — consent, documentation, referral criteria, sepsis bundles.
Assistant Nurse blueprint (ARN5061)
- Fundamentals of nursing and activities of daily living — 30%
- Vital signs, observation and reporting — 15%

Six-week study plan

- Weeks 3–4: antenatal/postnatal and pharmacology; memorise magnesium sulphate and oxytocin protocols; neonatal resuscitation algorithm from memory.
- Week 5: ethics, documentation, emergencies.
- Week 6: three timed mocks and error-log review (first-attempt method).

Yes, as Assistant Nurse (ARN5061) with two years' experience and a recognised 2-year ANM programme. ANMs are not licensed as Registered Nurses.
