Forensic medicine is the smallest of the physician specialties on the Gulf licensing schedule, and the one where the employer matters most: nearly every post sits inside a government forensic department. Understand that before you spend money on verification.

The exam

Two pathology texts and a toxicology text: the paper is about the dead body, the injured body and the poisoned body. Jurisprudence from your home country's penal code is not examined.

Recognised qualifications

MD or DNB forensic medicine, FCPS forensic medicine, Arab Board, the UK Diploma in Medical Jurisprudence or FRCPath in forensic pathology, and American board certification in forensic pathology. A two-year diploma such as DMJ or DFM is a shorter qualification and generally sits at a lower tier. MBBS graduates who performed medico-legal work as medical officers are licensed as General Practitioners. Who hires

Forensic departments in the Gulf sit under police, public prosecution or ministries of justice and health — Dubai Police's forensic department and the Saudi forensic medicine centres are examples. These employers recruit directly, security-clear every candidate, and frequently prefer Arabic speakers because reports and court testimony are in Arabic. Private hospitals do not employ forensic specialists. The practical route is therefore to identify the employer first: many government bodies sponsor the licensing themselves once they have selected a candidate. Clinical forensic work (assault and sexual offence examination) and teaching posts in medical colleges are the other openings.
