Saudi Arabia employs more expatriate pharmacists than any other Gulf state, in a market that is splitting in two: hospital and clinical pharmacy, where demand and pay are rising, and community pharmacy, where Saudisation has reserved most licence-holder posts for citizens. This guide gives the 2026 bands by employer, role and city, the allowances that change the real package, and what a pharmacist saves. The Gulf-wide comparison is in pharmacist salary in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar; the route is in how to get a pharmacist job in Saudi Arabia.

By employer type
| Employer | Where in the band | Package notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry of Health hospitals and health clusters | Middle of the band; government scale by classification and years | Housing allowance (often three months' basic a year) or provided accommodation, annual ticket, 30 to 45 days' leave, medical cover, gratuity; largest number of posts, campaign-based hiring |
| Military and security hospitals (National Guard, Armed Forces, Security Forces), King Faisal Specialist Hospital | Upper band; strongest clinical pharmacy departments | Provided housing in compounds, schooling support, generous leave; strict recruitment and board certification valued |
| Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare and oil-sector services | Top of the band | Compound housing, schooling, US-style practice; limited openings |
| University hospitals | Upper band for clinical pharmacists with academic roles | Teaching and research duties |
| Large private hospital groups (Dr Sulaiman Al Habib, Saudi German, Dallah, Mouwasat, Almana) | Middle of the band with incentives in some groups | Faster hiring, higher workload, housing allowance common |
| Community pharmacy chains (Nahdi, Al Dawaa and others) | Lower half of the band with sales incentives | Long hours; most licence-holder posts now Saudised, so expatriate openings are limited to some support and specialist roles |
By city
| City | Where offers typically fall | Rent for a one-bedroom flat |
|---|---|---|
| Riyadh | Upper half at tertiary and military centres; most clinical pharmacy posts; highest competition | SAR 2,500 to 4,500 |
| Jeddah | Middle of the band; strong private sector and university hospital; Hajj and Umrah seasonal demand | SAR 2,000 to 3,800 |
| Dammam, Dhahran, Al Khobar | Upper band at Aramco and military hospitals with housing provided; fewer applicants | SAR 1,800 to 3,500 |
| Regional cities (Tabuk, Abha, Hail, Najran, Jazan) | Middle of the band with accommodation usually provided and hardship allowances in some areas | SAR 1,200 to 2,500 |
Nationality-based pay scales persist at some employers, so Western-trained pharmacists may be offered above the band and South Asian or Egyptian pharmacists below it for the same grade; negotiate on classification, credentials and experience.
What the package includes
- Housing: provided compound accommodation at military, Aramco and many MOH hospitals, or an allowance of about 25% of basic (often paid as three months' basic annually).
- Transport: hospital buses or SAR 300 to 600 a month.
- Tickets, leave and gratuity: annual ticket, 30 to 45 days' leave, and end-of-service gratuity of half a month's basic per year for the first five years, then a full month.
- Dependants' levy: a monthly fee per family member that the employer may or may not cover; confirm it before bringing family.
- Overtime and on-call: hospital pharmacists on rotating shifts receive shift and on-call allowances; confirm the rate.
Cost of living and savings
A hospital pharmacist on SAR 9,000 with provided accommodation typically spends SAR 2,500 to 3,500 a month and saves SAR 5,500 to 6,500 (about USD 1,470 to 1,730, INR 129,000 to 153,000, PKR 411,000 to 485,000, EGP 72,000 to 85,000 or PHP 84,000 to 99,000). A clinical pharmacist on SAR 16,000 with a family renting at SAR 4,000 commonly saves SAR 7,000 to 9,000. Saudi Arabia has no income tax, but 15% VAT applies to most purchases. How to earn at the top of the band
- Get a clinical classification: a PharmD or clinical pharmacy Master's with hospital experience, plus board certification (BCPS, BCOP, BCCCP, BCIDP), moves you to the clinical pharmacist band; the SCFHS classification decides it (classification explained).
- Target military, Aramco and tertiary hospitals for the strongest packages.
- Pass the SPLE before you apply: a pharmacist who can start within weeks is paid more (SPLE guide, Pharmacist bank).
- Specialise where shortages are: oncology, critical care, antimicrobial stewardship, TPN, anticoagulation and medication safety.
- Arabic is a strong advantage in patient-facing and outpatient pharmacy.
Saudi Arabia versus the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait
| Country | Pharmacist band (monthly) | USD |
|---|---|---|
| Qatar | QAR 8,000 to 16,000 | USD 2,200 to 4,400 |
| Saudi Arabia | SAR 6,000 to 15,000 | USD 1,600 to 4,000 |
| Kuwait | KWD 700 to 1,200 | USD 2,280 to 3,910 |
| UAE | AED 6,000 to 14,000 | USD 1,630 to 3,810 |
Saudi Arabia's band is wide because government clinical posts sit far above community pharmacy; with provided housing, a Saudi hospital pharmacist often saves more than a Dubai community pharmacist on a higher headline figure.
