Prometric Sample Questions: How to Practise MCQs the Right Way
Five real-style Prometric sample questions with worked answers, plus the evidence-based MCQ practice method — spaced repetition, error logs and timed mocks — that lifts pass rates.
Most candidates practise MCQs wrong: they binge questions, feel busy, and plateau. This post shows you what real Prometric-style questions look like — and the practice system that actually raises scores.
Five sample questions (with reasoning)
1. Nursing — prioritisation
A post-operative patient suddenly develops dyspnea, chest pain and a SpO₂ of 88%. What should the nurse do FIRST?
Answer: Raise the head of the bed and apply oxygen. Airway/breathing interventions come before calling the physician or preparing medications — classic ABC priority logic.
2. General practice — diagnosis
A 55-year-old smoker presents with 3 weeks of painless hoarseness. The most appropriate next step?
Answer: Laryngoscopy referral. Persistent hoarseness >2–3 weeks in a smoker requires visualisation to exclude laryngeal carcinoma — not empirical PPIs or antibiotics.
3. Pharmacology — safety
Which electrolyte must be monitored in a patient on digoxin and furosemide?
Answer: Potassium. Loop-diuretic hypokalaemia potentiates digoxin toxicity — a high-yield interaction across every GCC exam.
4. Pediatrics — milestones
A healthy infant sits without support and transfers objects between hands but cannot yet pull to stand. Estimated age?
Answer: 7–8 months. Milestone windows are free marks if you've drilled them.
5. Infection control
What is the single most effective measure to prevent healthcare-associated infections?
Answer: Hand hygiene. When a "basic" option like this appears, it is almost always the intended answer.
The practice system that works
Chapter-first, then mixed
Master chapters individually before mixed mocks — our question banks are structured exactly this way, mirroring the real blueprints.
Keep an error log
Every wrong answer gets one line: topic, why you missed it, the rule to remember. Re-attempt logged questions after 48 hours and again after a week — spaced repetition turns misses into permanent marks.
Explanations over answers
Reading why the right option wins (and the others lose) builds the elimination skill the exam rewards. Never skip the explanation, even on questions you got right.
Finish with timed, full-length mocks
Two or three 3-hour simulations in your final fortnight build pacing and stamina. Book the real exam when mocks hold above 75%.
